An Art Deco ocean-liner hotel, a Retirada memorial, France's only fully marine reserve and quiet coves all along the border: the last village before Spain fits into a single day. Curated from the Loca database, no paid placement.
Heritage, nature and beaches placed so you can plan a walking route from the station and village centre.
An Art Deco ocean-liner hotel, prehistoric megaliths and the memory of an exodus that crossed these same hills. For the full story, see the History & culture page.
A traveller's hotel built between 1928 and 1932 by Perpignan architect Léon Baille in ocean-liner "paquebot" style, with direct references to naval architecture. Four floors of reinforced concrete, once housing a cinema, a restaurant and a rooftop tennis court. Disused since 1983, it's best viewed from the street.
A free-access memorial at the Col des Balitres, dedicated to the tens of thousands of Spanish Republican refugees who crossed this pass in February 1939 during the Retirada.
Several prehistoric megaliths dot the hills around the village: the Dolmen de Coma Estapera, the Dolmen du Col de la Farella and the Pedra Dreta de San Salvador menhir, traces of ancient occupation on this natural pass between two countries.
A pedestrian tunnel linking the station to the seafront, covered in contemporary street art. An unexpected attraction for such a small village.
A hiking route linking Cerbère to Portbou along the paths taken by the 1939 exiles, combining historical memory with views over the Mediterranean.
A small village church built in 1885, freely accessible during limited opening hours.

France's first exclusively marine nature reserve: 650 hectares over 6.5km of coastline shared with Banyuls, among the richest seabeds in the French Mediterranean.
A route marked out with underwater signposts off Peyrefite, open to swimmers and divers without specialist equipment. Check season and conditions before heading out.
The starting point of the coastal path toward Banyuls-sur-Mer and Collioure, a cliffside hike with Mediterranean views.
Several local outfits (Aloès Plongée, H2O Watersports, Vermeille Kayak) offer diving, snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding in the marine reserve from spring to autumn, sometimes including illuminated sunset paddle outings.
A guided kayak outing combining wine tasting with exploring the marine reserve, running from late May to late September on Sundays and some summer Wednesdays.

Two reliable spots for sunset: the Phare Solaire du Cap Cerbère facing the sea and the Col des Balitres with views over Spain's Cap de Creus.
Four days of festivities in early August around the village's patron saint: sardanes, dances and grilled food fill the streets and seafront.
A recurring July choral festival bringing together choirs from both sides of the Franco-Spanish border.
An evening market with live music on the seafront esplanade, held several times over summer.
An ephemeral summer marina with floating pontoons, set up 300 metres from the village shops.
In practice, Cerbère's restaurants, bars and cafés cluster mainly around Avenue Général de Gaulle and Place de la République in the small village centre, plus a handful of seasonal seafront spots at Crique de Peyrefite (Cap Peyrefite) that open in summer. It's a small village: better to wander and pick something on the spot than follow a fixed list.
